Ephrata Material Resources Center
I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink,
I was a stranger and you welcomed me...
The Material Resources Center in Ephrata, Pa., is a central collection point for items donated by people in the United States who are responding to request for materials from MCC partners.
Volunteering is central to the efforts of the Material Resource Center. The work of checking and packing kits, making comforters, hand-quilting heirloom quilts, and recycling and shipping is done through volunteer efforts. Volunteers come from Mennonite, Amish, Brethren in Christ and other churches as well as youth and school groups, service clubs, senior groups and families.
Donating material resources is a tangible way to stand with those who suffer from disasters, wars and poverty. The Material Resource Center is a collection point for kits, blankets and canned meat donated by people in the United States and requested by MCC partners worldwide.
Caring for creation activities are a creative outlet for volunteers and generate income to support MCC programs. Weavers and sewers create placemats and rugs, tote bags and aprons from denim jeans, neckties and other donated textiles. Cardboard, office paper and books are recycled, and old t-shirts are cut and sold for use as cleaning rags.
Quiltmaking is a specialty in the MRC quilt room. Each year hundreds of volunteers hand stich heirloom quality quilts that have been donated or pieced and sewn at the quilt room. The finished quilts are auctioned at MCC relief sales throughout the United States to benefit the efforts of MCC Relief, Development and Peace initiatives around the world.
